Grant's Birthday Bike!

Grant Walter was lucky enough to get a brand new mountain bike for his birthday this year! Here he is trying to contain himself as we make the five hour drive to Madison, WI to get it ;)

Leidy enjoying a delicious bone in the backseat

There it is! I think he loves it :)  And look!  New clip-in shoes with no duct tape!!  :)  He was pretty well-known for his orange clips wrapped with duct tape... this will be an adjustment!

Back in St. Cloud for a trial run on the jail trail!

A little cake treat after the ride :) Happy birthday to you, hunny!

We did a lot of gardening in July and August ...

Most days there was something to pick, can or freeze from the garden! Also, there were weeds to pull and watering to be done! Here's a pile of green beans ready to be cleaned, cut, blanched and froze!

My gardening buddy (when Grant's working late ;)

Mmm... the best meal of the summer! BLTs with fresh tomatoes along with some sweet corn :)

Check out this crazy bug that scared the **** out of me when I was picking tomatoes! It was giant!! Grant wasn't home so I called Mom for advice (she's quite the bug guru, you know ;). But, she was at a meeting so I talked to Dad and we thought it could be a lunar moth caterpillar (but actually the internet shows it could be a tomato hornworm which turns into a 5 spotted Hawkmoth??) so I shouldn't squish it but just relocate it so it wouldn't eat all my tomato plants! Not that I would squish that giant nasty thing anyways ... but Grant probably would ;) So, I carefully plucked off the branch he was on and moved him far away from my garden ;)
Note: No, I was not trying to pet that thing - I put my hand there so you could see how giant it was!  Luckily it did not jump into my hand ... eeek!

Speaking of bugs and things... we've had a LOT of these cute tiny bright green frogs with suction cups on their feet! They like to stick to our glass door at night and torment the kitties :)

My Goddaughter Massey's 2nd Birthday

My Goddaughter Massey turned 2! We celebrated with the Wiebers with some cake and presents! Look at her cute little self :)

Blowing out the candles!

Mmmm cake!

Time for presents! I gave her a piggy bank that I personalized for her :) Along with $2 since she turned 2, of course! ;)

I also gave her some monkey pjs and a coloring set (with magic markers that only color on the paper in the books since the kiddos like to color on Sandy's walls :)

Happy Birthday, Massey!

Baby Stanley's Shower

Marilyn hosted a 'Ready to Pop' party for Heather and new baby Stanley! It was super cute with all the 'pop' treats like popcorn, lollipops, bubbles, etc :) Why didn't we get any pictures of the cute decorations??

After we finished up dinner outside it started to sprinkle so we moved indoors to open gifts. Guests were asked to 'Pamper' Heather with diapers for the new baby :) Ella was a riot opening all the gifts and telling everyone many stories about them!  We gave her a Big Sister shirt and her new baby sister a Little Sister matching onesie :)

Discussing the diaper gifts with Mom and Gramma Rosie ;)

Canning Dilly Beans

We tried our hand at canning dilly beans for the first time with our friend Mike's recipe (who taught us all this gardening and canning business)! Here's our set up: the brine is boiling in the back left, the lids are boiling in the front left and the water bath canner is getting warmed up. The jars were in the sink in hot water after we washed and cut the ends off the beans to get ready to pack the jars!

The brine (for 4qts) consists of:
5C water
1/2C canning salt
5C white vinegar (Mike says to use Heinz!)

When ready to start, grab a jar and put the following in the bottom:
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 head fresh dill
1 garlic clove
1/2 tsp whole mustard seed

Then, pack the beans in and pour the boiling brine over them.  Wipe off the rim of the jar, put the lid and ring on.

Put the jars in the water bath canner, once it boils, leave them in for 10 minutes and they're done!

A finished jar of dilly beans and some other garden finds!

Clotho Ice Cream Social

I attempted a couple pies this year for the ice cream social! They seem to have turned out alright ;)

The day before the social is filled with making and freezing ice cream! Here's Molly pouring the cream mixture into a freezer.

Grant manning one of the freezers outside.  We always hope for a cool day so the ice cream making goes smoothly!

The day of the social the line usually gets pretty long in little Clotho :)

BBQs, hot dogs and coney dogs for lunch!

Lots of homemade pies for dessert!

And, of course, that famous Clotho Ice Cream!

And the 'Fake it till ya Make it' band in the background playing some tunes :)
