BWCA Winter Camping

I have been escaping to the winter wonderland of the BWCA for a few years now. Each trip has been wonderful. I have yet to canoe in these waters in the summer but think I prefer winter and less human population.

This year, my Uncle Kevin, a local of the area, Ed Bouffard, Big Al Erickson, Erik Grove and myself headed into the frozen lakes and forests via the Little Gabbro portage. County Hwy 230 (Spruce Rd) back leads back to the portage. They quit plowing the road a ways back. We parked and made the mile or so trek to the beginning of the portage trail. All of us were pulling an Eds Wilderness System ski-pulk. It takes the load off your back and makes for easier skiing in our opinion.

The Little Gabbro portage is hilly and about 3/4 miles long (254 rods). We chose to walk this portage because of the chance of falling and getting hurt on ski's. When we hit Little Gabbro, we cruised accross the lake to another portage. About 3 portages later and crossing paths with a dog team, we arrived at our campsite on the South Kawishawi River System.

This was the first year that we stayed at a designated campsite in the boundary waters. It worked out well. It was nice to have a fire grate to cook on. We set up camp after a long haul and relaxed. We operated out of this camp while we fished and took a few day long ski/snowshoe trips.

We lucked out with super warm weather and great fishing. Spotted a timberwolf running accross the lake, however, couldnt get them to howl at night.

I thouroughly enjoy the BWCA in the winter months and recommend it to those who enjoy solitude and a winter camping experience. It also helps to have a good crew (2-3 others) to enjoy your time with. Post if you have any questions about winter camping.
